Custom Built-Ins in Rhode Island
Built-ins are what a room gets when storage stops being furniture and starts being architecture. We design and build custom built-ins and cabinetry for homes across South County and greater Rhode Island — fireplace surrounds, mudroom lockers, home offices, laundry rooms, window seats, and the awkward corners that no store-bought cabinet will ever fit.

What we build
Most built-in projects start the same way: there's a wall, an alcove, or a corner that isn't working, and nothing you can buy actually fits it. Rooms in Rhode Island homes are rarely square — plaster walls bow, floors settle, and century-old trim runs at its own angles. A built-in is the answer because it's made for that specific space rather than an average of every space.
We work across the whole house, and the work tends to fall into a handful of categories.
- —Fireplace built-ins — cabinets and shelving flanking a mantle, with trim wrapped to match the existing surround
- —Mudroom and entry storage — benches, lockers, cubbies, drawers and hooks sized to your family
- —Home offices — desks, file storage and shelving built into the wall rather than parked against it
- —Living room media walls — console units with cable management, display shelving and closed storage
- —Laundry rooms — cabinets with wall-to-wall countertops over front-loaders
- —Window seats and bench storage — using the space under a window that's otherwise dead
- —Closets and wardrobes — real cabinetry instead of a wire shelf and a rod
- —Bathroom vanities — sized to the actual room, with the storage you need
- —Bars and wine storage — glass-front uppers, counters, and bottle racks
You see it in 3D before we cut anything
Every built-in gets modeled in 3D before a board is cut. You see the proportions, the door style, the shelf spacing, and how the piece sits against your existing trim — in your room, at the real dimensions.
This matters more for built-ins than for anything else we make. A freestanding table can be moved if the scale is wrong. A built-in is permanent. Moving a shelf in a model takes a minute; moving it after the cabinet is assembled and scribed to the wall does not. The 3D step is also where most of the good decisions get made — it's much easier to say "those doors are too heavy-looking" when you can see them.
You approve the design and the price before the build starts. No surprises partway through.
Built in the shop, fitted on site
Cabinet boxes, face frames, doors and drawers are fabricated in the shop, where the machinery, the dust collection and the controlled conditions are. That's how you get square boxes, consistent reveals and a clean finish.
Installation happens at your house, and that's where a built-in earns the name. Filler strips get scribed to the wall so there's no gap along a plaster bow. Toe kicks get shimmed level even though the floor isn't. Crown and base get coped into the existing trim so the new work reads as original. A cabinet that's simply pushed against a wall looks pushed against a wall — the scribing is the difference.
We handle the install ourselves. The person who designed and built your cabinetry is the person fitting it, which means the judgment calls on site are made by someone who knows exactly how the piece went together.
Matching older Rhode Island woodwork
A lot of our built-in work goes into homes with existing millwork worth respecting — colonials in Wickford, older houses around Wakefield and East Greenwich, cottages near the water.
Matching starts with identifying the original finish, because shellac, lacquer, oil and modern polyurethane all behave differently and none of them take color the same way. From there it's sample boards: we mix, test against the actual woodwork in the room's own light, and adjust. It usually takes several rounds. On a recent Narragansett fireplace project, getting new oak to read as the same age as the existing mantle meant mixing dyes into shellac across several sample passes before the color was right.
We can also profile existing trim so new casings and crown match the old ones, and match wood species so the grain reads consistently.
Materials and finishes
We build with solid hardwood and hardwood plywood — oak, maple, cherry, walnut and poplar are the common ones, chosen for what the project needs and what the room already has. Painted work usually gets a poplar or maple frame with an MDF panel where stability matters more than grain; stained and clear-finished work gets solid stock and matched veneer.
For homes near the water in Narragansett, Charlestown and along the South County shoreline, we'll specify materials and finishes with humidity and salt air in mind. Coastal houses move more than inland ones, and built-ins have to be detailed to allow for it.
What custom built-ins cost in Rhode Island
Built-in cabinetry typically runs from a few thousand dollars up to $10,000 or more. A single run of laundry-room cabinets with a countertop sits near the bottom of that range. A full fireplace wall with glass-front uppers, integrated lighting and matched trim sits near the top.
What moves the number: overall size, how many doors and drawers there are (hardware and fitting are labor-intensive), solid hardwood versus painted panel construction, glass, lighting, and how much matching the existing woodwork demands.
Every project is quoted individually after the design conversation, and you get the full 3D design and a clear price before anything is built. We'd rather spend an extra hour on the quote than have a surprise land in the middle of a project.

Built-Ins Questions
How much do custom built-ins cost in Rhode Island?+
Built-in cabinetry typically runs from a few thousand dollars up to $10,000 or more, depending on size, materials, door and drawer count, and how much matching of existing woodwork is involved. A single run of laundry cabinets sits at the low end; a full fireplace wall with glass-front uppers and integrated lighting sits at the high end. Every project is quoted individually, and you see a full 3D design and a firm price before anything is built.
How long does a built-in project take?+
Most built-in projects run from about three weeks to two months from approved design to installation, depending on scope and our current schedule. You get a realistic timeline with your quote.
Are built-ins made in the shop or on site?+
Both. Cabinetry is fabricated in the shop where the tools and dust collection are, then installed and trimmed on site so the final fit accounts for the real walls, floors and existing trim. Scribing on site is what makes a built-in look built-in rather than placed.
Can you match the built-ins to my existing trim and woodwork?+
Usually, yes. We can profile existing trim, match wood species, and mix finishes to match — starting by identifying what the original finish actually is, then working through sample boards tested against the real woodwork in the room's own light.
Do you design built-ins in 3D before building them?+
Yes. Every built-in is modeled in 3D first so you can see proportions, door style and shelf layout in your room before anything is cut. It is far easier to move a shelf in a model than after the cabinet is built.
What parts of Rhode Island do you build built-ins in?+
We build custom built-ins and cabinetry throughout South County and greater Rhode Island, including South Kingstown, North Kingstown, Narragansett, East Greenwich, Wakefield and Charlestown.
How much does a custom woodworking project cost?+
Most custom furniture projects start around $1,500–$2,000, and built-in cabinetry typically runs from a few thousand dollars up to $10,000 or more, depending on size, materials, and complexity. Those ranges reflect solid hardwood, a design made for your actual space rather than stock sizing, and cabinetry built in the shop and fitted to your home on site. Every project is quoted individually, and you'll see a full 3D design and a clear price before anything is built.
How long will my project take?+
It depends on the scope and our current schedule, but most projects run from a few weeks to a couple of months from approved design to installation. You'll get a realistic timeline with your quote, and we keep you updated as the work moves along.
Do you provide a design and quote before building?+
Yes. After we talk through your ideas, your project is rendered as a full 3D model so you can see exactly what you're getting before a single board is cut, along with a clear quote to approve.
What kinds of wood and materials do you work with?+
We work with a range of hardwoods — walnut, maple, cherry, oak, and live-edge slabs among them — and can match wood species and finishes to your home. If you have a particular look in mind, we'll help you choose the right material for it.
Can you build from my photos, sketches, or inspiration images?+
Definitely. Photos of your space, rough sketches, or saved inspiration images are a perfect starting point. We take your ideas and turn them into a buildable design that fits the way you actually live.
Do you deliver and install what you build?+
Yes. We handle delivery and professional installation ourselves, so your finished piece is fitted and set up properly in your home.
Do you also repair and refinish existing furniture?+
Yes. Alongside custom builds and built-ins, we repair, refinish, and restore furniture worth keeping — from structural repairs to bringing a tired finish back to life.
