Repair & Refinishing

Furniture Repair, Refinishing & Restoration in Rhode Island

Some furniture is worth more than it costs to fix. A dresser that came down through the family, a dining table that's taken thirty years of holidays, a chair that everyone in the house sits in. We repair, refinish and restore pieces worth keeping.

What we repair and restore

Furniture fails in a small number of predictable ways, and most of them are fixable.

  • —Loose and failed joints — chairs that rack, tables that wobble, case pieces gone out of square
  • —Structural breaks — cracked legs, split rails, broken stretchers
  • —Stripping and refinishing — taking a tired or damaged finish back to bare wood and building a new one
  • —Finish repair — where the piece doesn't need a full strip, just attention
  • —Veneer work — lifting, bubbling, and missing patches
  • —Drawer repair — rebuilt runners, re-glued boxes, drawers that bind or drop
  • —Water, heat and sun damage
  • —Hardware — repair, replacement, and sourcing period-appropriate pulls and hinges
  • —Modification — shortening a table, adapting a piece for a new use

Repair, refinish, or leave it alone

The first question on any older piece is how much to do, and the honest answer is sometimes "less than you're asking for."

On genuine antiques, an original finish is part of what the piece is. Stripping it can remove real value along with the scratches. Where a finish is largely intact, cleaning, reviving and spot-repairing often produces a better result than a full strip — the piece keeps its history and stops looking tired.

A full strip and refinish is the right call when the existing finish has failed outright: heavy water damage, alligatored varnish, sun bleaching across one side, or a previous refinish done badly. We'll tell you which situation you're in before we start, and if we think a piece should be left mostly alone, we'll say so.

Structural repair

Most wobbly furniture is a glue failure, not a wood failure. Hide glue and older adhesives let go over decades, especially in a coastal climate where humidity swings. The correct fix is to take the joint apart, clean out the old glue completely, and re-glue it — not to inject fresh glue into a dirty joint or drive a screw through it, both of which buy a year and make the real repair harder.

Where wood has actually broken, the repair depends on where the load goes. A clean break along the grain can often be glued and clamped to full original strength. A break across the grain in a load-bearing part usually needs reinforcement, or a new part made to match. For a missing or unsalvageable component we'll build a replacement in matching species and finish it to blend.

Finish work

Refinishing starts with identifying what's on the piece. Shellac, lacquer, oil and polyurethane strip differently, take color differently, and fail differently — and getting this wrong at the start costs a lot of time later. Shellac in particular is common on older American furniture and dissolves with alcohol, which is both convenient and a hazard if you don't know it's there.

Color matching is done with sample boards, tested against the piece itself in the light the piece will live in. Wood color looks different under shop fluorescents than in your dining room, and matching by memory across a drive home does not work.

The final film is chosen for how the piece is used. A dining table needs to survive wet glasses and hot dishes. A dresser top needs to look right more than it needs to be bulletproof.

Is your piece worth restoring?

Sometimes the answer is no, and it's better to hear that up front. Restoration is labor, and labor on a piece that was cheaply made to begin with can exceed what it would cost to replace.

The pieces that are almost always worth it: solid wood construction, real joinery, something with family history, or anything you'd be unhappy to lose. The ones that usually aren't: particleboard carcasses, stapled joints, and veneer over MDF where the substrate has swelled.

Send photos — overall shots plus close-ups of the damage and any joints that have failed — and we'll give you a straight assessment of what the piece needs, what it would cost, and whether we think it's worth doing. That assessment is free, and there's no pressure attached to it.

FAQ

Repair & Refinishing Questions

Is it worth restoring my furniture, or should I replace it?+

It depends on how the piece was built. Solid wood with real joinery — or anything with family history — is almost always worth repairing. Particleboard carcasses and veneer over swollen MDF usually aren't. Send photos of the piece and the damage and we'll give you a straight assessment of cost and whether we'd recommend doing it.

Should an antique be fully refinished?+

Often not. On a genuine antique the original finish is part of the piece's value, and stripping it can remove that along with the scratches. Where a finish is largely intact, cleaning, reviving and spot repair usually gives a better result. A full strip is the right call when the finish has truly failed — heavy water damage, alligatored varnish, or a bad previous refinish.

Can you fix a wobbly chair or table?+

Yes, and it's one of the most common jobs we see. Most wobble is a glue failure rather than broken wood. The proper repair is to disassemble the joint, clean out all the old glue, and re-glue it — injecting fresh glue into a dirty joint or driving in a screw buys about a year and makes the real fix harder later.

Can you match the existing finish on a repair?+

Yes. We identify the original finish first, then work through sample boards tested against the piece itself in the light it will actually live in, adjusting until the color reads right.

Can you repair damaged or missing veneer?+

Yes — lifting, bubbling and missing patches are all repairable. For missing sections we patch in matching veneer and blend the finish across the repair.

How much does furniture repair cost?+

Repair work varies far more than new construction, because the scope isn't clear until the piece is assessed. Simple joint re-glues are modest; a full strip, repair and refinish on a large case piece is a multi-day job. We quote after seeing the piece or clear photos of it, and the assessment itself is free.

How much does a custom woodworking project cost?+

Most custom furniture projects start around $1,500–$2,000, and built-in cabinetry typically runs from a few thousand dollars up to $10,000 or more, depending on size, materials, and complexity. Those ranges reflect solid hardwood, a design made for your actual space rather than stock sizing, and cabinetry built in the shop and fitted to your home on site. Every project is quoted individually, and you'll see a full 3D design and a clear price before anything is built.

How long will my project take?+

It depends on the scope and our current schedule, but most projects run from a few weeks to a couple of months from approved design to installation. You'll get a realistic timeline with your quote, and we keep you updated as the work moves along.

Do you provide a design and quote before building?+

Yes. After we talk through your ideas, your project is rendered as a full 3D model so you can see exactly what you're getting before a single board is cut, along with a clear quote to approve.

What kinds of wood and materials do you work with?+

We work with a range of hardwoods — walnut, maple, cherry, oak, and live-edge slabs among them — and can match wood species and finishes to your home. If you have a particular look in mind, we'll help you choose the right material for it.

Can you build from my photos, sketches, or inspiration images?+

Definitely. Photos of your space, rough sketches, or saved inspiration images are a perfect starting point. We take your ideas and turn them into a buildable design that fits the way you actually live.

Do you deliver and install what you build?+

Yes. We handle delivery and professional installation ourselves, so your finished piece is fitted and set up properly in your home.

Do you also repair and refinish existing furniture?+

Yes. Alongside custom builds and built-ins, we repair, refinish, and restore furniture worth keeping — from structural repairs to bringing a tired finish back to life.
