Custom Furniture in Rhode Island
We build furniture one piece at a time, in solid hardwood, for people who know what they want and can't find it. Dining tables sized to the actual room. Live edge and epoxy river tables built around a particular slab. Desks, beds, benches, consoles and the occasional thing nobody has a name for.

What we build
The common thread in custom furniture work is dimension. A dining room that's 11 feet wide needs a table that isn't 8 feet long, and the stock sizes at a furniture store come in 6 and 9. Custom means the piece fits the room, seats the number of people you actually host, and clears the doorway on the way in.
The pieces we're asked for most often:
- —Dining tables — in solid hardwood, sized and shaped to the room
- —Live edge and epoxy river tables — built around a specific slab, in maple, walnut or birch
- —Coffee and side tables — including walnut live edge and biscuit-joined slab tops
- —Desks — freestanding or built to work with an existing room
- —Beds — including canopy beds and platform beds with integrated under-bed storage
- —Benches and entry pieces
- —Consoles and sideboards
- —One-off pieces — the thing you sketched on a napkin
Wood selection
We work in solid hardwood: walnut, maple, cherry, oak, and live-edge slabs. For a custom piece, wood selection is a real decision rather than a spec line — the same table in walnut and in maple are two different pieces of furniture.
Walnut is dark, dramatic and expensive, and it's what most people picture when they picture a live edge table. Maple is pale, hard, and takes a river pour beautifully because the epoxy reads against it. Cherry starts pink-orange and darkens over years into something much richer, which is either the best or worst property of cherry depending on whether you were warned. Oak is the workhorse, and it's what most older Rhode Island woodwork is made of, so it's often the right call for a piece that has to live alongside existing millwork.
For live edge and river work, the slab drives the design. You tell us the species you want and what the piece needs to do — the size, the room it's going in, whether it's a river pour or a clear finish — and we select a slab that suits those goals, then design the piece around its actual shape and figure rather than forcing it into a predetermined outline.
How a custom piece comes together
It starts with a conversation — the room, how you use it, what you've been looking at, and what you want to spend. Photos of the space and saved inspiration images are genuinely useful here; so are rough sketches. Nobody expects you to arrive with a drawing.
From there the piece gets modeled in 3D, so you can see proportions and detail before anything is cut. This is where the fine-tuning happens: apron height, leg taper, overhang, edge profile, how thick the top reads. You approve the design and a firm quote, then it's built.
We deliver and set up what we build. For most pieces that's straightforward; for a slab table it means two people and a plan, because a 2-inch walnut top is heavier than it looks.
How it's built to last
Solid wood moves — it expands and contracts across the grain with the seasons, and in a coastal state it does so noticeably. Furniture that ignores this cracks. Tops get fastened with hardware that allows seasonal movement rather than being glued and screwed rigid. Breadboard ends, when used, are pinned so they can slide.
Joinery is chosen for the load. Mortise and tenon where a joint carries racking stress, dominoes and dowels where alignment matters more than strength, and mechanical fasteners only where a piece needs to come apart for delivery.
Finishes are picked for how a piece will actually be used. A dining table that will see wet glasses and hot plates needs a different film than a console that will hold a lamp.
What custom furniture costs
Most custom furniture projects start around $1,500–$2,000. That reflects solid hardwood rather than veneered particleboard, a design made for your space rather than a stock size, and the hours that go into building one of something rather than a thousand.
A dining table in a common hardwood sits near the start of that range. A large walnut live edge slab table with an epoxy pour runs considerably above it — the slab alone can be a significant share of the cost, and epoxy work is slow.

Built-Ins & Cabinetry
Built-ins are what a room gets when storage stops being furniture and starts being architecture. Custom Furniture Questions
How much does custom furniture cost in Rhode Island?+
Most custom furniture projects start around $1,500–$2,000. That reflects solid hardwood, a design built for your space rather than a stock size, and the labor of building one of something. A dining table in a common hardwood sits near the start of that range; a large walnut live edge slab table with an epoxy river pour runs well above it. Every piece is quoted individually after a 3D design.
Can you build a table to fit my dining room?+
That's most of why people call. We size the table to the room, the number of people you actually seat, and the clearance you need to walk behind a pulled-out chair — and we check that it will fit through your doorways before it's built.
Do you build live edge and epoxy river tables?+
Yes, in maple, walnut and birch among others. For live edge work the slab drives the design. You tell us the wood species you're after and what you want the piece to do, and we select a slab to match those goals, then build around its actual shape and figure.
Can you build from my photos, sketches, or inspiration images?+
Definitely. Photos of your space, rough sketches, or saved inspiration images are a perfect starting point. We take your ideas and turn them into a buildable design that fits the way you actually live.
How long does a custom piece take?+
Most projects run from a few weeks to a couple of months from approved design to delivery, depending on scope and our current schedule. You get a realistic timeline with your quote.
Do you deliver and set up the furniture you build?+
Yes. We handle delivery and setup ourselves, so your finished piece arrives safely and ends up where it belongs.
How much does a custom woodworking project cost?+
